Welcome to a simplistic and spectacular Colorado Weekend Getaway for fall colors: Twin Lakes, near Leadville Colorado {2022}. The golden aspens and shimmering lakes offer something for every outdoor enthusiast – biking, hiking, leaf peeping, historical village sights and time on the water.
About Twin Lakes, Colorado Twin Lakes is an unincorporated town 25 minutes from Leadville. Here you will find a coffee shop, rustic lodging, a general store, and a small kayak/paddle board rental. Adjacent to the small settlement is the main Twin Lakes Trailhead with access to 15 miles of single track for mountain biking, hiking launches to the water. There are two National Forest campgrounds on the lake (required reservations) and one additional trailhead that makes access to the beautiful historical village accessible (about a 3 mile hike).

Hike to a Historical Village. While you enjoy the amazing colors as a backdrop explore the historical “Interlokken” village that is an obtainable 2.5 mile hike with little elevation gain or loss. The village was once a dance hall & resort on the lake – I can see what attracted people to it then and now!

Mountain Bike, Twin Lakes Loop Trail With only 600 feet of gain and loss this net even ride is FUN. While some small rock features exist, it is rated green and beginner friendly. If you complete the entire loop it is about 15 miles. The trail hugs the water most of the time, rolls through amazing aspen groves, and opens up into a beautiful valley with an amazing panorama of the mountain range. I recommend taking the loop clockwise for easy riding.

Time on the Water at Twin Lakes, Colorado. In addition to the biking & hiking opportunities this a more quiet and zen aspect to your weekend getaway could include a picnic or quiet time on the water! The lakes are open for paddle boarding as well. Check out this quick clip of the amazing fall foliage color change on the lake.
Plan your own Colorado Weekend Getaway to Twin Lakes: I completed my specular color change adventure in two days (only one night) in Twin Lakes but feel like a road tripper (car camper) may enjoy just one night more to really explore the area. Nearby Leadville is fun to explore with bars, coffee shops, mineral museums, tourist oriented train ride (AMAZING way to see fall colors!), and shopping.
Please remember you will be visiting a high altitude environment and be aware of altitude symptoms if you are not familiar! Be prepared with plenty of water, nutritious food and always a well planned out trip as you may be in and out of cell phone reception.
Let me know what your perfect Colorado weekend getaway entails! Happy Fall!
